St Helen's Guild
The Guild was formed in 1982 with the aim of providing a forum for parishioners to meet informally on a monthly basis. At the beginning there were only some twenty members and talks were mainly of a religious nature. Two years later it was decided to promote ecumenism in the area by extending membership to all members of the local community and widen the scope of activities. Meetings continued to be held monthly but were widened to embrace general talks, demonstrations, outings and shows as well as running a harvest supper and a New Year social. This proved very successful and, at its peak in the mid 90s, membership had increased to 120 of whom two-thirds were non-Catholic.
In addition the Guild ran a small lottery and a repository and raised money by various means, such as concerts and flower festivals, to help with church expenses and donate to various charities at Easter, Christmas and harvest-time; over £10,000 since its formation. Guild members were also responsible for flowers, cleaning, ground maintenance and other church activities.
In addition a Coffee Drop-In takes place at 10.30am on the first Wednesday of the month run alternately by the Guild and the United Reformed Church.
NOTE: There is an Extraordinary General Meeting on Tuesday March 4th 2008 at 7.30pm to discuss the possible winding-up of the Guild and what, if anything, takes its place. Activities are currently suspended pending the outcome of this meeting.
